I'm looking to make a DIY version of a kitchen countertop cup organizer, similar to this one I found online: https://www.amazon.com/Truvalent-Kitchen-Countertop-Cup-Organizer/dp/B0CT11NPS7. I have some 1x2 pieces of wood but have zero woodworking or DIY experience. Is this a doable project for me? I have some specific questions:
1. Should I just use wood glue to join the two pieces of wood, or do I need fasteners?
2. What tools do I need to properly join the wood and carve out the circles?
3. As a beginner, would it be easier for me to cut full circles or to carve out slots? I want the slots to be deep.
4. What other tips can you share for someone who's never done this before?
I might be able to borrow some tools from my neighbor who has experience!

I just want to throw in a quick note – while you can DIY this, preparing for the costs is essential. If you want to do it right, expect to spend around $136 for all the materials and tools. Just a quick breakdown:
- Wood glue, clamps, a drill, a jigsaw, some wood, and sandpaper.
But remember, tools you buy now can be used for future projects, so it might balance out in the end!
Honestly, even as a total rookie, you can pull this off if you're prepared! Just to answer your points:
1. Only wood glue is needed here, no fasteners. The key is to align the wood grain correctly.
2. Get some clamps to hold everything together along with the wood glue. If you're doing more projects, I recommend also investing in a jigsaw for future cuts.
3. Drilling holes is definitely easier for a beginner than carving slots – just go for it!
4. Remember, it won't be 'perfect', and that's okay! Enjoy the process and take your time. If you're feeling stuck, ask for help from your neighbor – might make things easier!
Thanks for the advice! What specific tools do I need for drilling, if I decide to go that route?
You can definitely handle this! To join the wood, just wood glue will work fine, but make sure to clamp it firmly. You might want at least two clamps, but the more, the better for a solid hold. For cutting, a hand saw will do just fine, and if you're looking for a clean round recess, a forstner bit with a drill press is the best route.
As for carving versus drilling, cutting through is usually easier for beginners, but if you want to carve the slots, give it a shot! You can always shift to drilling if the carving doesn't work out. Just take your time and don't stress too much about perfection. It's a learning experience! Also, ask your neighbor for tips – having someone experienced around can really help.
Sounds great! Do you have any recommendations for the best tool to carve the circle slots?

That’s okay, but I think the main goal for OP is to try it out and learn, not just save money!
