I'm planning to install a pot hook on the side of my MDF cabinet to hang my 12" Lodge cast iron pan. Instead of using a wood screw, I'm considering predrilling a hole and securing it with a bolt, washer, and nut since I feel like MDF might not hold up well under the weight. Before I go ahead with this plan, I want to make sure I'm not making a mistake since I can only do this once without ruining my cabinet. Any thoughts?

Using a bolt with a backing plate is a solid plan. MDF can be tricky, but with the right support, it should work fine. Just make sure everything is tight and secure, and ideally, use fender washers to help spread the load.
It's definitely a good idea to reinforce that MDF. You might want to add a wooden backing to the inside of the cabinet before you attach the hook. Maybe something like a strip of plywood would help distribute the weight better. I did this for a towel rack and it handled a lot of weight without any issues.

Honestly, I wouldn't fully trust MDF to hold a heavy cast iron pan. If it ever fails, it might happen at the worst time. Definitely consider the backing piece for extra support. Better safe than sorry!
