Can I Build a 100 KWH Grid-Tied Solar System for Under $20k?

I'm looking to set up a 100 KWH / 25 KW grid-tied solar power system soon, ideally before 2025 when tariffs come into play. My daily energy needs are around 88 KWH, plus I'd like to have some extra capacity. I'm aiming for a solution that provides good value, includes communication features for monitoring performance, and is low-maintenance enough to install and forget about. Is it realistic to get this entire setup for less than $20k, or should I consider going off-grid instead?

Building a grid-tied system for under $20k might be tough, especially considering all the costs involved with permitting and interconnection. If you go off-grid, I've recently priced components for something similar to your needs: about $5715 for the panels and roughly $4200 for inverters. Plus, you'll need battery backup, adding another $9200 or so. The total can really add up, especially if your energy needs are higher than 1000 kWh/month, which is pretty common. Depending on your location, you might have to oversize your panel count to meet winter demand too.

Thanks for the breakdown! Your pricing seems solid, but I would suggest looking at newer battery options like those from Ecoworthy. You could save around $3000 with their server rack batteries!

That’s great info! I’m in Finland, and my calculations came out differently. I found good deals on 24 kWh of panels for around $3540 and batteries for about $3500, including shipping from a EU vendor.

Honestly, grid-tie batteries alone will likely push you over the $20k mark. If you go for an off-grid setup, you can DIY your battery system for around $10k. That still leaves around $10k for everything else you need like inverters and wiring, but you'll probably need roof mounts for installation too.
