Hey folks! I used to live in Texas, where it was pretty normal to add a roof over your driveway, but you couldn't put up walls. Now, I'm in Southern Illinois, and I've checked out the local building codes. It looks like adding a permanent structure on the easement is a no-go here. I'm not really savvy with these codes, but has anyone figured out a workaround? My garage is a tight fit for our two cars, and with the harsh weather we get, it would be great to have some sort of protection.

Yeah, if your plan to extend a roof from the garage ends up being too close to the road, that could definitely be an issue. But if it’s just a metal roof extending about 10 feet out, you might want to clarify how close that is to the actual easement.
You’re right about the easement restrictions; permits for permanent structures in those areas can be a real headache. What you’re looking for is typically called a carport where I live. You might run into some resistance for anything that crosses into that easement zone.
