Can I Build a Krenov Style Scrub Plane with Pine?

I'm thinking about making a Krenov-style laminated scrub plane using pine, with just a hardwood sole, strike button, and top wedge. My main concern is whether this setup would hold up for a couple of years until I can get some hardwood for a full body plane. Would it be feasible to also consider a metal sole?

That sounds like an interesting experiment! Using pine might lead to some issues, especially since it could crack when you tap on it to adjust your iron. But you could likely get a decent amount of use before that happens. If you decide to go with a metal sole, check out some of Stavros Gakos’ older YouTube videos; he shows how to attach steel soles to planes.

Would it still work if I added a metal or hardwood strike button?
