I'm facing a bit of a dilemma with my backyard renovation project. We want to construct a patio cover this season, and we have a 10x20 slab already in place. We're looking to extend it with an additional 10x13 slab to cover the entire area with a 33ft patio cover. The issue is that there's a large garden bed right at the edge of where the new slab will go, and my wife has put a lot of work into it and is eager to plant there. I was wondering if we could build the cover now, pour the footing for one of the posts in the yard, and then move the garden bed to pour the slab at the end of the season. The plan is to place two posts on the existing slab and one post in the yard past the garden. Would this approach work?

Honestly, I think a 20x16 patio is way better than a narrow 10x33. Consider the space you’ll gain and how much more usable it will be!
You definitely want to think about sunlight! Your garden needs sunlight, so before you proceed, track the sun's path to ensure the patio cover won't block it throughout the day. It might affect your planning.
How big is that garden bed? If it’s manageable, it shouldn’t take long to move—like a couple of 4'x8'x2' raised beds. That's merely a weekend job! If they’re in the ground, just get some veggie garden mix for the new spot and you’ll be good to go. Plus, putting in potted plants could help utilize the patio space, just remember to choose plants that can thrive in shade!
Good point. I really don't want to move the garden bed now, but it might be necessary.
