Can I Build a Shed on an Old Trailer to Get Around Local Building Codes?

I'm facing some zoning issues where I want to put my shed, and my town won't allow it. I'm considering buying an old trailer chassis and building a shed on top of it. The idea is that if the town complains, I can argue that it's still a trailer, not a permanent structure. Does anyone have thoughts on this workaround?

Buying an enclosed trailer might be a smarter choice here. It's more straightforward and would keep you within town regulations. If you take the wheels off the chassis, your town might argue it's no longer a trailer, which could lead to them enforcing some local ordinances, similar to how they treat cars on blocks. An enclosed trailer would allow for some storage without all the legal headaches!

I see your point about the wheels. But enclosed trailers can be pricey, and I want high, flat walls to fit more stuff. I’m actually thinking of leaving the wheels on and just lowering it onto blocks for a better height.

I know of someone in a similar situation who bought old semi trailers to workaround building restrictions in a flood zone. It worked well for them and they've got a decent workshop going! Just a thought if you have the space and want to avoid the hassle.

That sounds awesome! I have limited space on my lot, but I’m considering options like storage containers. They seem pretty efficient for outdoor tools and might be easier! What do you think?
