Can I Build a Sturdy Bed Frame for My Friend?

So I've done a little woodworking before—like making a spice box and a simple bookshelf—but now I'm looking to tackle a bigger project. My best friend needs a sturdy bed frame that supports his weight (he's around 185cm tall and 110-120kg). The challenge is that he doesn't want a box spring, and I've noticed that most frames have slatted bases that sit on small wooden edges. I was thinking about building a robust frame from scratch or creating an inset to reinforce a commercial frame. The current size is about 90x200cm, which needs to stay the same. Is this project feasible for someone like me? How can I make it sturdy enough to last?

You can definitely create that sturdy frame or inlay! Just grab some 2x4s or 4x4s and attach them inside with structural screws for extra strength. It sounds like you've got a solid foundation; you just need to think about support and maybe add a middle beam to help with weight distribution.

That’s a great tip! I might have to get a bit creative with the support because of the under-bed boxes.

It's totally possible to build this bed, especially since you're open to experimenting. Just remember that wood can expand and contract with changes in the environment, so you’ll want to account for that in your design. Also, check out tutorials on building heavy-duty bed frames online; they'll be super useful!

Those small wooden edges will actually hold more weight than you think! Just make sure to glue and nail everything securely. Since you've built smaller items before, this bed frame is just a scaled-up box—totally doable. You might want to check out some bed frame plans online or watch a few YouTube tutorials to help you along the way.

I’ll definitely look up some videos. Thanks for the encouragement!

For a quick fix, consider using plywood to add support. You might need to reinforce the middle section with a support beam, but this could give you a good and sturdy base for the mattress.

I’ve added some extra support legs already, but I’m excited to try building a proper one that lasts longer than the cheap stuff!

Sticking to a standard bed size is definitely a wise move because it makes finding a mattress and sheets much easier. Given the size you mentioned, that is indeed a common size in many places.

Good to know! I figured it was pretty standard, but I wanted to double check.
