Hey everyone! I'm looking to make a couple of speaker stands, aiming for a height of about 28 inches. The construction involves two sides with 8.25-inch panels and the other two with 7.5-inch panels, along with a top and bottom, using 0.75-inch MDF. I'm curious about a few things:
1. For the visible panels, I plan to veneer them, but can I cut corners on the backing veneer? Is it okay to only use 6.75 inches of backing veneer on the two 8.25-inch panels, considering the interior sides will have a butt joint with the 7.5-inch panels?
2. Is it feasible to use leftover veneer as edge banding if I can cut it right? I've noticed some people go with just regular edge banding, so is there a reason for that?
3. The dimensions for the speaker stands will be 8.25 x 9 x 28 inches, and I'm hoping to have a 12 x 14 inch top, making for a 2.5-inch overhang on two sides and a 1.75-inch overhang on the others. Does that sound reasonable to you?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

1. Unfortunately, you can’t skimp on that backing veneer. The smallest dimension will be 7.5 inches since that's how they’ll meet at the butt joint.
2. Using leftover veneer as edge banding is doable, but it’s not the quickest method. Edge banding is super handy because it sticks quickly with an iron, and cleanup is a breeze. Veneer, on the other hand, needs a glue that takes longer to set, making it trickier to manage.
3. The overhang you’ve got planned really depends on your style preference. If it looks good to you, then go for it! Also, consider using veneered plywood; it simplifies the project since making your own veneered panels can be quite a task and requires specific tools.
Definitely, you can tackle this project! The main thing is to dive in and start—it's half the battle. Sure, mistakes might happen, but you’ll learn from them, and in the end, you’ll have custom-made furniture that you’re proud of. Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress!
Thanks! That's encouraging to hear. I've found that just getting started can be a huge hurdle in itself!

I see what you mean about the butt joints! I guess I was mixing things up a bit. Thanks for clarifying that!
