Hey everyone! I just got myself a water butt and planned to attach it to a downpipe using a diverter kit. However, I was surprised to find out that the downpipe is made of aluminium, unlike the plastic one out front that I was expecting. I can't put the water butt at the front because it would be in direct sunlight all summer, causing it to heat up a lot. The back of the house is more sheltered, which is where I want to set it up. So, can I still connect my water butt to this aluminium downpipe? Do I need to do anything special when cutting it? And what's the best tool to use for the job?

Good news! Aluminium forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to air, which actually helps prevent corrosion. Just make sure to use a hacksaw to cut through the pipe, and don’t forget to file down any sharp edges afterward to avoid any injuries. You should be set to go!

Totally agree! A hacksaw is the way to go. It’ll make the cut nice and clean.
