Can I Convert Indoor Furniture for Outdoor Use?

I have a three-tiered shelf that seems to be made of particle board or another type of porous wood. The top surfaces and edges are covered with some sort of dark wood-colored vinyl. I'm hoping to use this shelf on my balcony but I'm really worried about it getting damaged by water. I've never attempted this kind of project before and I'm totally unsure where to start. Are there specific products I need to use for the vinyl versus the particle board underneath?

The truth is, particle board doesn't do well with moisture at all—it can fall apart if it gets wet. You might want to consider sealing it to prevent damage, but it might be a bit tricky depending on the condition of the board. If you can manage to keep it completely sealed, that might help a lot.

Got it! So sealing it is definitely an option, then?
