I've got a cherry tree that was cut down a while back, and now I have some large logs sitting in my yard for about three years. I'm wondering if one of those bigger logs can be turned into a mantle for my fireplace. What's the best way to go about it? Is it something I can try to do myself, or should I hire a professional? Just a thought, how have the logs been stored? Are they just lying on the ground or stacked? It can make a difference in their condition!
Definitely, you can use that cherry log for a mantle! Keep in mind that while cherry wood lasts for a long time, the outer layer (sapwood) might be rotting, but the heartwood inside should be fine. Check out local sawyers to help you get it milled. Just a heads up, if your log has any metal in it, you'll need to cover the cost for blade damage, so make sure to check for that first!
I agree with the milling approach, but pay special attention to the log's condition. Sometimes if it's been down for too long, the interior can be bad too. It’s worth slicing into to see what you have inside!
