Hey folks! I recently stumbled upon one of my grandfather's woodworking projects and I'm excited to try recreating it for Mother's Day. My tools are pretty limited since I don't have a bandsaw, but I'm wondering if I can cut a 2x4 or 2x8 down to a thinner 1x size. I think the term is 'resawing'? Is it feasible for me to do this without a bandsaw? Would love to hear your thoughts!

You're right about the tools needing to keep the cut faces parallel and flat after resawing. It's a bit of a process and often requires more practice than you'd expect, especially when doing it by hand. The easiest route is to stick with a bandsaw or just buy the right thickness materials. If you're set on doing it, I definitely suggest marking your cuts very accurately and ensuring you have good support while cutting. It's a bit of a workout but doable!
Honestly, if you're just looking to get some 1x4 or 1x8, it might be easier to just buy them instead of trying to cut down the 2x material. It'll save you a lot of hassle!
Yeah, you got it, 'ripping' is another way to say it! But just a heads up, the thickness of the wood you're starting with isn’t exactly 2 inches. A 2x4 is actually about 1.5 inches thick, so keep that in mind as you plan your cuts.
Yeah, that sounds like a solid plan! I’ll check out the store tomorrow.
