Hey everyone! I'm looking to install a 13kW solar system on my single-family home in Connecticut and I'm getting mixed feedback on whether I can do it myself. I'm okay with handling the permits and inspections, and I'm pretty handy. Has anyone here done a similar project in CT? Did you need to hire a licensed contractor for any part of the installation?

I'm currently installing a 13.6kW system in CT myself and haven’t faced any issues. I got the necessary permits from my town, and Eversource approved my plans. Just a tip: I’ll need a licensed electrician to connect it to the meter, but that's about it.

You can definitely do it yourself if your town allows you to pull the permit as a homeowner. Just remember to submit an interconnection application with Eversource through Powerclerk.

I did a 15kW DIY solar setup last year, and I knew absolutely nothing about it when I started! I read a lot, took some courses, and that really helped me get organized. Just make sure you plan every detail beforehand. There’s plenty of information out there to guide you through the process!

In Connecticut, you actually need NABCEP certification and a licensed contractor to hold either a PV-1 or E-1 license for grid-tied systems. You could have an electrician verify your work, but keep in mind that they might not want to take on that liability. Good luck!
