Can I DIY Fix a Damaged Aluminum Duct from My Dryer?

Asked By CuriousCat329 On

Hey everyone! My cat has a knack for sneaking around behind my dryer, and I'm suspecting he may have caused some damage to the flexible aluminum duct connected to it. I'm planning to put some cat deterrents in place after I get the duct fixed. Do you think it's feasible to just cut off the damaged parts, or is there a better way to go about this? Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yeah, trimming off the damaged ends should work just fine! Just make sure you give it a good inspection afterward to ensure everything is sealed properly.

If the damage isn't too bad, you could get away with just cutting it back. But honestly, these ducts can be so flimsy; if it’s really crumpled, a replacement might be the safest bet. They’re pretty cheap and easy to swap out if needed.

While cutting off the bad parts is a short-term fix, I'd recommend considering a more permanent solution. If your duct run is long, using smooth rigid ducting could really improve airflow efficiency and keep your cat from creating more chaos. Plus, don’t forget to clean out your dryer duct thoroughly while you're at it! Those flexible drill brushes do a great job!

That’s a great point about cleaning! I wouldn’t have thought of that. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I've learned the hard way that a clean duct is a happy duct. Totally agree!
