Can I Dry Wood in My Oven Instead of Air Drying?

I'm looking for advice on drying wood and wanted to know if anyone has experience using an oven for this. I usually buy my lumber, but after cutting down a crabapple tree this spring, I want to use the wood. Since I don't have time for air drying and don't want to invest in a dehumidifier for a one-time project, I'm considering using my kitchen oven. Is this a viable method, or should I just wait until next year for the wood to naturally air dry?

I've had success drying bowl blanks in the microwave, which is a bit more controlled. I recommend though, if you decide to use the oven, be aware of the thickness of your pieces; thicker wood will take longer to dry and it might crack from too much heat. Just keep an eye on it, and maybe test a small piece first!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely test a small piece first before committing to the larger lumber.

I’d advise being careful with oven drying. If you dry wood too quickly, it can warp or crack, so patience might be key here. Just something to consider before you heat things up!

While I haven't dried wood in the oven myself, I did put some small, air-dried boards in at a low temperature for about 5-6 hours to kill any bugs before starting my projects. This can be a good way to ensure you're not introducing any pests when working with your wood.
