Can I Fit Companion Plants in a Square Foot Garden?

I'm curious about companion planting in a square foot garden, especially since I live in the mountains of Arizona (zone 8A) where the soil isn't great. I'm working with container and raised bed gardening to maximize my space. Is it realistic to plant a determinate tomato along with several carrots in the same square foot? Or maybe a cucumber with some bush beans and radishes? I'm really looking to get the best results possible from my small setup.

Yeah, you can definitely mix some companion plants, and it can work out! The 'three sisters' method, which includes corn, beans, and squash (or melons in my case), is a good example. I’ve had positive results with root veggies like radishes alongside high-growing plants like beans or peas. Carrots can be tricky because they sometimes get overwhelmed by tomatoes or peppers. This year I'm going to follow the garden squares closely to help manage that. Also, I love adding marigolds to attract pollinators and keep pests away—works wonders!
