Can I Fix My Door Lock or Should I Replace It?

I'm dealing with a bit of a lock issue on my French doors that lead to the deck. They were installed in the late 90s, and when the doors are open, I can get the handle to turn the lock 90 degrees. However, when the doors are closed, I can only turn the lock 45 degrees, and it doesn't latch properly. I suspect it might have to do with the bottom part of the lock since I can start pulling the door open. Is this something I can fix, or do I need to replace the whole lock? I'm curious why it works fine when the doors are open but not when they're shut. Given the age of the doors, I'm hesitant to buy expensive replacement parts. Any insights would be appreciated!

I appreciate all the input! I'm going to try checking the frame and see if it needs adjusting. I'll keep you all posted once I tackle this issue.

You might be in luck! Andersen usually has parts available for their older products. Check out their parts website; they could have what you need without going for a full replacement.

I've had similar issues with our Andersen French doors. They tend to need alignment adjustments often, especially in spring. There should be some adjustment screws on the hinges that might help you out.

It sounds like your lock is getting snagged on something when the door is closed. I’d suggest checking the frame to see if there’s an obstruction preventing the lock from turning all the way. Since it turns 90 degrees when the door is open, it's likely not a lock mechanism issue but more about alignment or obstruction.

Definitely! It could just need some cleaning and fresh lubrication. Andersen has their own brand of lubricant which might do the trick.
