Hey everyone! I'm new to this platform and could really use some advice. I live in West Virginia and I'm eager to start a container garden with some veggies. Specifically, I'm looking to grow cucumbers, spinach, carrots, strawberries, and kale. Can I successfully grow these in containers? I'm thinking about using some deep flower pots. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot 🙂

Yes, you can definitely grow those veggies in containers! Just make sure to use a good potting mix or a blend of peat and coco coir, along with vermiculite or perlite, and some compost or manure for nutrients. There are also container-specific cucumber varieties if you want to consider that. Just keep in mind that you'll need to water them more frequently as they grow. Also, remember that spinach and kale prefer cooler temperatures, and carrots need deep containers to develop well. Happy gardening!
Welcome to gardening! Strawberries are great in containers since they have shallow roots. I’ve had success with them in hanging baskets, and I’ve grown kale in 12-inch deep containers. Right now, I’m trying spinach in similar pots, but they’re still small seedlings. I haven't tried cucumbers or carrots yet, but it sounds exciting!
Absolutely, you can grow a variety of veggies in containers! Just a heads-up—spinach, carrots, and kale are cooler weather plants, so it’s best to start them in late summer for a fall harvest. I typically use larger pots, around 18 inches square or even bigger for optimal growth.
