Hey everyone! I'm currently renting and on a couple of waiting lists for allotments, plus I'm planning to buy my own home next year. In the meantime, I want to get a head start on my own orchard by growing dwarf fruit trees in large pots. Would this be a good idea, especially for transplanting them into the ground later? I'm aware they'll need regular watering and that I'm looking at self-pollinating varieties. I'm considering a couple of apple trees, plus maybe a plum and a pear tree. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you can definitely grow dwarf fruit trees in pots! Just keep in mind that while it’s a great way to have some trees now, they won’t grow as quickly as bare root trees planted in the ground next autumn. But if you want something to enjoy on your patio, just make sure they’re on suitable rootstock and that you're consistent with watering and feeding them!
I've had several dwarf cherry trees in pots for around four years, and they do just fine! They need regular water, especially in the summer since they'll wilt if they're thirsty. If you take good care of them, they’ll give you beautiful blossoms and delicious cherries every year!
Absolutely, it works! I’ve got a mix of dwarf and semi-vigorous fruit trees all in pots. They’re still young and haven’t flowered yet, but I've seen great potential. I’m considering switching to fabric pots or building a larger wooden planter for better growth. It's exciting to see how they’ll develop!
Good luck with your trees! I’ve had mixed results too, but it’s fun to experiment and see what works.

That’s awesome! I just started hand-pollinating my trees because my varieties were blooming at different times. I managed to save a few plums, but it’s been a learning experience! Hoping for a better harvest next year.
