Can I Grow Peas and Beans on the Ground Without a Trellis?

I'm curious if I can let my peas and beans sprawl on the ground without any trellising. I have raised beds, so they won't be on the actual soil, but I live in a really windy area. The wind can get pretty fierce, and I'm worried that any trellis would get battered. If it's not feasible to grow these plants without a trellis, I'm willing to put one in for support. I'm also thinking of adding hedges or windbreaks for next season. Any tips from those with experience growing peas and beans would be really appreciated!
