Can I Hard Prune Wisteria in August Without Killing It?

I've got a large property that I manage, and I'm in a bit of a bind. The builders are doing some work that requires repointing the brickwork, and they've asked me to hard prune a big, established wisteria. I know it's not the best time for this, especially after the severe drought we've had recently. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm worried about potentially harming the plant, so any advice would be appreciated!

You might lose a year’s worth of flowers, but don’t worry too much! Wisteria can handle tougher pruning than you'd think. Just be ready for a quiet flowering season next year, but it should generally bounce back!

Yeah, it's not ideal, but if you have to, go for it. Just remember that hard pruning usually isn’t done until February. You might not see flowers next year, or maybe even for a couple more years, but if it's well established, it could actually benefit from a fresh cut! Just try to take it easy on the pruning.

Good to know! I wasn't sure how much I should cut back. Sounds like I just need to be careful!

I really don’t think you’ll kill it! Wisterias are super resilient. Just keep it well-watered for the rest of the summer and into autumn until it sheds its leaves. If you do that, I bet it’ll bounce back nice and healthy by late spring!
