Can I Install a Door Jamb Directly on Drywall?

I'm working on a rectangular passageway that's entirely covered with drywall and I'm looking to install a 32" door. Is it okay to attach the door jamb directly to the drywall, or do I need to have a wooden frame for support?

But wait, why can't I just leave the drywall? It seems like a much easier solution. I don't want to spend days patching and sanding!

I totally get that! The metal corners might hold for a bit, but using the studs for the jamb will make it sturdier in the long run. It may be a bit of work now, but it'll save you headaches later!

It's not a good idea to put the door jamb straight onto the drywall. You should remove the drywall and measure from the studs to ensure you have the right rough opening for the door. This will give you the proper support and help avoid future issues.
