Can I Install an Indoor Antenna in My Roof Cavity?

Asked By CuriousNomad58 On

I just moved into my new home in Melbourne and chose not to install a roof antenna after a consultant suggested it would be fine to add one inside the roof cavity. I have several antenna ports throughout the house that connect to the cavity, but I'm wondering if it's really a good idea to put an antenna there. Given that my roof is made of aluminum with sarking, will this setup actually work? Should I have insisted on a roof-mounted antenna instead? Has anyone had similar experiences?

You're right about needing a good signal. First off, just to clarify, your roof is actually steel, not aluminum. If you check around your neighborhood, most homes that have TV antennas installed have them on the roof or chimney for a reason. That said, if you prefer free-to-air channels for things like news and shows rather than relying solely on streaming apps, you might want to reconsider where you place your antenna. An outside installation usually performs better. If you'd like to stick with the indoor setup, just be aware that it may not give you the best reception depending on your local signal strength. It might still work, but you're taking a gamble on quality!

That's true! Including the antenna can give you access to local channels without fuss. But if your neighbors have antennas and you're aiming for solid reception, it might be worth considering adding one outside later.
