Hey everyone! I'm wondering if it's okay to install solar panels directly onto the shingles of my garage roof. Is it necessary to elevate them a bit on a rack, or can I just screw them straight down? I'll definitely seal any holes I make for safety. Thanks for your help!

It's not a good idea to screw the panels directly onto the roof! They really need some airflow underneath for both heat dissipation and to prevent moisture from getting trapped, which can damage your roof over time.
Typically, solar panels are clamped rather than mounted directly to the roof. You’ll want to think about whether your shingles can handle the point load where the clamps are applied. Direct installation might also make the panels run hotter, which isn't ideal since they work best at lower temperatures. Also, make sure there's enough space underneath the panels for the wiring!

There’s definitely space at the top for the cables. But I'm confused about the clamping part. Wouldn't mounting brackets also need to be screwed into the shingles? What about keeping my point of entry exposed, is that okay or should it be covered up too?
