Can I Just Throw Seeds in Soil Outside and Let Them Grow?

I'm curious if I can simply throw some seeds into the soil and let them grow naturally. I've just planted some creeping thyme seeds in a small area of soil, and I want to know if they'll sprout without any extra care like growing them indoors first. Is this a feasible approach?

It's kind of a mixed bag. Nature does its thing when seeds are scattered, but many garden seeds require specific conditions to grow. If you have a good spot with bare, moist soil, seeds like calendula or foxglove might flourish, while fussier ones like tomatoes might not. Always check the seed packets for outdoor sowing advice!

You could also lightly cover the seeds with some compost to give them a little boost!

Yeah, you can totally give it a shot! Sometimes seeds do just fine when sown directly in the ground. Keep in mind though, starting seeds indoors usually boosts the chances of them thriving. It's best to choose plants that adapt well to outdoor sowing.

Check the seed packets for outdoor sowing instructions. Some seeds thrive when sown outside but others, like biennials, may not grow much until the following year. Annuals and fast-growing perennials are typically fine to sow directly, but you might need to thin them out later. Familiarizing yourself with what grows well in your soil can prevent disappointment!
