Can I Keep My Thyme and Rosemary Indoors Over Winter?

I recently bought some thyme and rosemary and currently have them on my balcony. Since I live in Germany, I've heard it's possible to leave these herbs outside during winter. However, I'm unsure if it's a good idea to bring them inside. While my home would be warmer, it would also be darker than the outdoors. What do you think?

In my experience, my thyme and rosemary didn't thrive indoors at all. They prefer being outside, even during the colder months. Just keep an eye on them if you decide to leave them out! They might do just fine, especially if they’re in good pots and sheltered from harsh conditions.

So you just leave them outside during winter? Do you do anything special to protect them?

Bringing them indoors is possible, but lack of light could be an issue. I've dealt with some harsh winters, and while my outdoor plants have survived just fine without anything extra, my potted herbs struggled when I brought them inside. If you're going that route, consider using grow lights to help them out! If you choose to keep them outside, ensure they're in frost-proof pots and maybe have some herbs dried up as a backup.

Good to know! Sounds like I might be on the right track since our temps are similar.

Rosemary is pretty hardy and can handle those winter conditions without much trouble, so you should be fine leaving it outside!
