Can I Make Hammer Handles from Glued Decking Boards?

I'm thinking about making hammer handles for my 2lb blacksmith hammers by gluing together two decking boards made of spotted gum. Unfortunately, I can't find suitable hammer handles or the right sized wood locally, so this seems like my best option. Will this method hold up?

In theory, this should work just fine! Woodworkers often glue two pieces together to create a larger piece. Just keep an eye on the grain direction to avoid grain 'run out,' which happens when the grain curves away from the board's length – around knots are usually the worst offenders. You might want to check out some axe-making forums for tips on handle grain as well.
