Can I Manage a Veggie Patch While Working Away for Two Weeks?

I'm on a 2:1 roster, working two weeks away and one week at home. I want to know if I can successfully maintain a 12x12ft veggie patch given that I have someone at home to water but they won't do any other maintenance. Can I keep up with pest management and general upkeep when I return?

I totally get where you’re coming from. My partner works on the same schedule, and I do a garden at our place while he’s gone. It’s like a surprise every time I come back! Sometimes it’s flourishing, and other times it’s a mess because I wasn’t there to deal with pests. If you're okay with the ups and downs and see it as a fun experiment, then go for it! Just remember, if you're someone who hates losing plants to pests, maybe it's not for you. There are tactics like insecticides and covers, but it depends on your budget and how much effort you want to put in. Bottom line: It’s doable, just can be a bit frustrating!

Honestly, you might want to consider an AeroGarden or something similar. It’s compact and you can grow multiple plants while you're away. Two weeks away isn’t too long, and these systems make it super easy to grow without too much hassle. Plus, it’s kind of like gardening in a sci-fi game, right?

Choosing the right crops is key here. Some veggies are more forgiving than others. For example, if a cucumber over-ripens while you're away, it can stop the plant from producing more fruit. Stick to hardier greens like chard, onions, and root vegetables that can wait for you. Also, consider using insect netting to keep pests away, and if you can, set up drip irrigation to ease the watering burden on your house sitter. This way, you'll have a better chance of coming home to a thriving garden!
