Can I Modify My Window Frame to Fit a New Casement Window?

I'm replacing my kitchen window with a new casement window, but I've run into a bit of an issue. The current window measures 40x41.5 inches, while the new one is slightly wider at 40.75 x 40.875 inches. The height is fine, but the opening is only about 40.5 inches wide. I heard it's not a good idea to alter the opening by shaving it down. However, I'm considering trimming a quarter inch off each side of the new window if it's possible. I've already removed the trim and checked the drywall, confirming there's a quarter inch gap on the sides. I'd love to hear some advice on this situation!

Remember, if it’s the window frame, you might only need to work with the studs. Usually, it’s the 2x4 framing for the window plus the 3/4 inch window framing, the latter of which is often non-structural so you can remove it if necessary.

Did you check the space between the studs after removing the trim? Sometimes there are gaps filled with spray foam that can give you extra room. You might have more clearance than you think! But if the fit is too tight, adjusting it could be a hassle, so definitely measure carefully!

I did check! I used a keyhole saw to cut back some drywall, and there's only about a quarter inch space between the window and the frame on each side.

If you're looking to avoid damage, an electric hand planer is a great option! It can quickly size down the studs and keep things neat. That eighth inch won’t make a huge difference, so it might just solve your issue!

A sawzall could really help you shave down the sides of those jack studs if you're comfortable with tools. Just make sure those studs aren't structural—wouldn't want to compromise the integrity of your wall!

Are the jack studs structural? If they are, I'm not sure this is the right route.
