I'm getting new siding for my home, and I've noticed that my vinyl shutters are looking pretty faded. I'd like to repaint them black to give them a fresh look. However, a rep at Sherwin-Williams told me that painting vinyl shutters black could cause them to melt, which I find hard to believe. I'm not an expert in home improvements, so I'd love to know: Can you actually paint vinyl shutters black? If so, what type or brand of paint would you recommend for this project? Thanks, and have a great day!

I've got white vinyl shutters, and they warped after years in the sun. Painting them black could definitely make that worse due to heat absorption. Just a heads-up based on my experience!
You can definitely paint vinyl shutters, but be cautious. SW has some colors that are safe for vinyl, but they might not have true black. Black can warp in direct sunlight, so if your shutters are already dark, you should be fine. Just check what the darkest shade is that they offer that’s vinyl-safe. I went with a charcoal from SW for mine, and it worked out well!
Rigid PVC vinyl can withstand high temperatures, but just keep in mind that even if it doesn’t melt, it can still warp or deform. Make sure you get the right paint for it. I’ve heard you can't find a black vinyl-safe paint at SW, but I’d also suggest considering replacing them since new shutters aren't super expensive!

If you're looking to strip old paint off shutters, what’s the best method? Can I just sand it off or is there a better way?
