I'm in the early stages of redesigning my kitchen and have chosen ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets, specifically a full overlay shaker style. My main concern is whether I can place a base cabinet, which is 12" wide and features a top drawer with lower tray dividers, right against a side wall. I understand that the door might not open past 90 degrees, but that's okay with me. Since the door will swing into the doorway opening, I don't mind if the handle touches the wall. I'd prefer not to use a narrower cabinet with a filler panel since that would force me to downgrade to a 9" base that doesn't have the configuration I want. You should be fine! The main thing to consider is the type of hinge you choose. If it's not an old-fashioned external hinge, the door opening should stay within the cabinet's width. You might have to shave the front corner slightly if it brushes the wall, but chances are you won't need to.
I think the door will work okay, but just a heads up: if things aren’t perfectly square, there's a little risk the drawer could hit the wall when you pull it out. Just make sure everything’s aligned right!
Starting with a filler panel may help with the arrangement if you're not set on sticking the cabinet directly to the wall. It can give you some flexibility with door swings too!
