So, I've just picked up an Asian pear tree and an apple tree. I'm curious about the idea of planting both of them in the same hole instead of grafting. Is that a good idea, or will they just end up competing against each other?

If you plant both trees together, they’re going to be battling for water and nutrients, which could lead to both of them struggling. It’s generally not recommended to plant different trees too close together like that. They won’t thrive as well as if they were separated.
I’ve actually planted two different varieties of apple and even figs in the same hole, and they’ve done fine! But I haven’t tried mixing too many different types like an apple and an Asian pear. I’d say it might work if they’re closely related, but it’s a bit of a gamble!
Planting an Asian pear and an apple together is tricky because while they share some family ties (Rosaceae), they belong to different genera. You won’t get a hybrid tree; more likely, you’ll just have two trees competing for space and resources, which isn’t ideal. Better to keep them in separate spots for their health!
