Can I Pot My Japanese Maples Now or Should I Wait Until Spring?

Hey everyone! I've been in my new home for about a year now and haven't done much with the garden yet. I've noticed some interesting plants that the previous owner seemed to have just tossed into the ground, including these two Japanese maples. I used to have one in a pot, but it didn't survive the kids playing football.

I've read that it's best to repot these in late winter or spring, but I'm wondering if I can dig them up now and put them in pots since they're really healthy but kinda lost in the mix of other plants. If I repot them now, can I keep them watered and protected through winter? Or should I just wait until spring? I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

It's generally better to wait until winter when the maples are dormant. Moving them now might stress them out, and they'll do best when they don't have to manage their leaves. Plus, unless you're in a rush, waiting could save you a headache later on!

Thanks for the tip! I’m definitely not in a hurry, so I think I’ll take your advice.

You can move them now if you really need to, but like everyone has said, it's much better to wait until they're dormant in the winter. They’re likely safe where they are for now, so just let them hang out and enjoy the rest of the growing season.

I totally get that. It sounds like they might've just planted things in random spots when they left. I've seen it too, and it's frustrating because some plants get pot-bound and die. But for your maples, it's definitely best to wait until they’re dormant before you move them.

Exactly! It's a weird choice to leave the plants behind instead of taking them in the pots. Just have some patience with the maples—they'll thank you later!
