Can I Remove and Reinstall the Cabinet Above My Fridge for a New One?
Asked by CleverFox42
I recently purchased a house and I'm looking to upgrade my fridge. The current fridge stands at 68.5 inches tall and it's hitting the bottom of the cabinet above it. I'm considering getting a fridge that's 69.5 inches tall. Would it be a straightforward task to remove the cabinet above, refinish it so that the new fridge fits, and then reinstall it? Or would this be better suited for a professional? Thanks in advance for your advice!

If there's no crown molding involved, the removal might be straightforward. Just be cautious; if you do find screws, it could still be tricky if it’s stapled or glued. Otherwise, if you're DIY-savvy, you can manage it, but hiring someone is also a safe bet if you're unsure about the job. Good luck!

Instead of removing the cabinet, consider just getting a fridge that fits! You can adjust the bottom of the cabinet frame, but depending on the situation, that might not clear everything. If you do decide to swap cabinets, make sure you find one that matches your existing ones first, or it might look off.

You might want to check for screws attaching the cabinet to the wall and adjacent cabinets first. It usually has 2 to 4 screws at the back and possibly some on the sides. If you find and unscrew them, the cabinet should wiggle free. The tricky part sometimes is finding a new cabinet that matches. If it doesn't come off easily, you may have some molding or glue involved, which makes it a bit more complicated. If you're handy and there are no wires or plumbing issues, you could likely do this yourself in a couple of hours. If not, hiring a handyman could cost around $200, plus materials.
