I recently helped a family member clean their drains, and I came across a drain cover in their master shower that seems to be firmly sealed. Is it common for drain covers to be secured like this? If so, is there a way to safely remove it without damaging anything?

The drain cover typically just snaps into place, held by retainer clips located in the diagonal slots. I’d recommend avoiding prying at the tiles to prevent any damage. Instead, you could try using a trampoline spring tool through those slots to carefully pull it out. Good luck!
Yeah, it's possible that the cover can come off! If for some reason you can't get it out, replacing it is a straightforward backup plan. You'd just need to buy a new cover that fits the drain type, which is usually pretty easy to find.
