I've heard some buzz about people returning their free batteries claiming they were a 'gift', and that they could still get full store credit without a receipt. I'm a bit skeptical about this and wanted to clarify before I invest in the m12 hack and possibly save an extra $50. Is this really a thing?

I've never seen anyone get away with that to be honest! If you don’t have a receipt and paid cash, you might be out of luck. I doubt a reasonable employee would just give you a refund like that. If they don’t tighten up on these things, honest customers could be in trouble.
Based on what I know, Home Depot typically won't accept returns without a receipt. They might check their system if you provide the card used for the purchase. It's generally not wise to try returning items without proof of purchase; it could flag your account for future returns.
The whole 'hack' thing works the other way around! You actually need to show the receipt when returning the battery. It used to be a trick to get a refund without one, but that's frowned upon and likely won't work anymore. Just a heads up!

Exactly! The original hack involved returning one item without a receipt to get full credit. Nowadays though, that's considered fraud. Now it's more about prorated returns, not hacks.
