I'm a total beginner looking for some guidance. I need to make a custom frame for a large painting and want to cut several long pieces that are 1.25" x 3". Is it feasible to choose a good quality 2x4 from Home Depot and rip it down to that size? I'm just worried about handling such a small piece on a table saw—especially since I don't have a jointer or planer to prep it first. Am I overthinking this, or is there a safe method to do it? Appreciate any tips!

You can definitely rip a 2x4 down to 3" by cutting off the rounded edges. Getting it down to 1.25" might require some extra care though. I’d recommend using a feather board for stability and some outfeed support to help manage the cut. Start by ripping it halfway and then flip the board to complete the cut. Just be ready to sand a lot afterwards! Good luck with your project!
Both of these suggestions are really helpful, thanks everyone!
One thing to keep in mind is that a 2x4 will often have the center pith, which can cause your finished pieces to cup over time. If you're worried about that, you could opt for a 2x8 instead. Cut your 3" pieces from either side and leave the center pith as scrap. This way, you have a better chance of avoiding any warping in your final pieces.
