Hi everyone! I'm a new woodworker and a bit of an anxious person when it comes to fire safety. I'm very concerned about the dangers of burning oily rags, especially linseed oil ones. I don't have a fireplace or a fire pit, just a coffee can. My question is, can I safely burn linseed oil paper towels in it outside? I really want to enjoy woodworking without constantly worrying about fire hazards. Thanks so much for your help!

You've got the right idea being cautious! Linseed oil rags can definitely cause fires if not handled properly. The best method is to put them in a metal can with water, making sure they're submerged. This cuts off oxygen and prevents fires. Seal it closed, and you can throw it away when it's full. Just make sure to dispose of them safely; soaking them is key to being fireproof!
Honestly, don't worry too much! Laying the rags flat on concrete should keep them safe from spontaneous combustion, especially if they're not crumpled. You're clearly being cautious, which is a good way to start woodworking! Just keep an eye on them until you're comfortable. And hey, consider using water-based finishes in the future if the linseed oil makes you uneasy!
Thanks for easing my mind! I'll keep that in mind for future projects.
You can absolutely burn them in your coffee can, but be cautious. Don’t overload it; just burn one or two at a time to control the fire. If it makes you more comfortable, laying them flat outside might be best until you're more used to what’s safe!
Thanks! I appreciate your encouragement. I will try taking it slow.
To really be safe, think about using a bucket of water for the rags instead. This way, they remain submerged and can't catch fire. You can also lay them flat outdoors or on a concrete surface to dry safely. Be mindful of the breeze and where they are to ensure they don't pose a fire risk later!
That sounds like a great plan! I think I can manage that setup.
It's really not a good idea to burn anything inside that isn't specifically designed for it. Burning oily rags can release harmful fumes and is generally unsafe. Instead, lay the rags flat outside to dry, maybe weighted down with a rock to keep them from blowing away. No need to risk starting a fire! If you're worried, consider soaking them in hot soapy water to remove the oil before disposal.
I've been doing that! It's much safer.
Thanks! The outside drying idea is definitely more comforting.

Thank you! I like the idea of the metal can. What should I do with them once they're in the water?
