Can I Safely Cover an Outlet with a Blank Plate?

I'm wondering if it's okay to cover an existing outlet with a blank plate since I can't remove it myself (I'm renting). The kids using this outlet are old enough to not need baby-proofing, but I want to make sure this doesn't pose any safety risks. Any advice?

I think using a locking cover could be your best bet here. Regular blank plates usually won't fit well because they don't account for the outlet itself. You might end up needing to remove the outlet, but if you're able to, make sure to keep the original parts safe for when you move out!

Good point! Best to keep everything in a bag so it’s easy to swap back before you leave. Your landlord might even appreciate the upgrade if you ask them to switch to tamper-resistant outlets.

You'll need a special blank plate that actually fits over the outlet, but keep in mind that most of them aren't designed to cover an outlet, so it might stick out a bit from the wall. They typically use the same screws as the outlet, so you may need to grab longer screws to secure it properly without leaving gaps. Also, if it’s not fitted correctly, it defeats the purpose of safety, so be cautious!

Exactly! If the plate's not flush against the wall, it could leave gaps that kids might get their fingers into. You could look for those locking outlet covers that need a key; they might be a more reliable solution!

Honestly, if it's just temporary, and you're careful about how you do it, I don't see an issue with putting a blank plate on. Just be sure it's secure enough that kids can't get into anything. But definitely think about switching to a child-proof outlet when you can!
