Can I safely wash barkdust off my AC unit?

I recently had barkdust sprayed in my yard by a company hired by my HOA, and unfortunately, they got it all over my air conditioning unit that's behind a locked gate. Fine barkdust has made its way into the AC coils and inside the unit itself. I'm wondering if it's safe to just hose it down, or would it be better to use a leaf blower or compressed air? Are there any safety precautions I should keep in mind while cleaning it?

I hosed mine down last summer with no issues. Just remember to check that the unit is off first! If you have a shop vac, that’d be great for getting out the dirt and any dust stuck around too. And while you’re at it, you could hopefully get a little reimbursement from the HOA for the mess they made!

Definitely clean it as part of your maintenance. Just do it right—disconnect the power so you don’t shock yourself, and keep an eye for any spiders. It’s also fine to use the hose as long as the dust isn't caked on like cement!

Yeah, you can totally give it a good rinse! Just make sure to disconnect the power first. You might want to remove the top grille or fan unit a bit so you can spray from the inside out. It helps clean the fins too since the dust usually collects on the inward side. Just be careful with the water and don’t spray directly on the motor part at the bottom.
