Can I Save or Reuse Leftover Polyurethane?

I've got about 2 oz of polyurethane left in a cup that I used on some stained wood. Should I pour it back into the original container or just discard it? It feels wasteful to throw it away, but I'm concerned it might be contaminated with other materials used during the application. What should I do?

I've got a hack! I keep small amounts of poly and stains in those soup cups from my Chinese takeout. They're free, and I toss them when I'm done. If you're looking to save it, make sure to seal it well. Just be careful with the finish, though—I only keep them if I'm happy with how it turned out.

Great idea! Can I just leave the poly in the cup and zip it up in a bag? Will the plastic hold up?

Totally! Just keep an eye on it. The plastic should be fine for a short time.

If you're uncertain, it's safer not to pour it back into the original container. You could keep it in a separate container for future use, but just be aware it might not be the same quality after being used. It's always a bit risky.

Thanks! I'm just trying to find ways to not waste what I have.
