I've got a pretty significant crack in a piece of drywall around a coax cable cover. Although it's still somewhat intact, I was thinking of removing it since I need to match the paint color anyway. This area is really noticeable, so if there's a way to fix the drywall instead of ripping it out entirely, I'd like to give it a shot. Otherwise, I'll just find a less visible spot to work on. You might be able to spackle that crack, but keep in mind you'll still need to sand it down and repaint that whole area. It could end up looking like a whole new patch anyway, so consider that before diving in.
Honestly, I'd patch that up and look for a piece of drywall from a spot that's not so visible. It's going to be cleaner in the long run than trying to salvage that damaged piece.
Are you sure that’s drywall? It kind of looks like plaster to me, especially if you're in an older house. If it is plaster, you might want to handle it differently.
