Can I Split a River to Fill My Well Without Causing Damage?

I have a river that runs behind my property, and I'm wondering if there's a way to channel some of its water into a well I want to build in my garden. I'm concerned about potential issues like causing a landslide or making the ground too wet and risking damage to my house. Any tips on how to do this safely? Also, how would I go about building the well itself?

Technically, you probably don't own the river water, so diverting it can be tricky. Even a small alteration could lead to legal issues or environmental concerns. Plus, if the river floods, it could backflow into your home, which would be a disaster. It's not like you can just split the flow and expect everything to stay contained.
