Can I stain old parquet with just 100 grit sandpaper?

I've got some old parquet flooring lying around and I'm thinking about turning it into a shelf. The only sandpaper I have is 100 grit. Is that enough to prep it for staining, or do I really need to get 200 grit? I'm not aiming for a flawless finish—just something decent.

Yikes, 100 grit is pretty rough! If you’re trying to prep the wood by removing old finishes, you might want to reconsider. Just a heads up, if there's polyurethane on it, it might be tough to get a good stain without more abrasive sandpaper.

Yeah, there's definitely some kind of polyurethane on there.

Using 100 grit sandpaper isn't ideal, but you can still work with it. I'd recommend at least 150 grit for a better result, or even 180 if you can swing it. It'll help the stain go on more evenly for a nicer finish.
