Hey everyone! I'm totally new to woodworking and recently got inspired after making a small shelf for my art markers. I just ordered a basic carving kit online, and I was wondering if I could use some fallen logs and branches from my yard to practice. I live in the rural Pacific Northwest, so there's plenty of wood around. Is it okay for a beginner to use this kind of wood, or should I be cautious? I only have the carving kit and a Dremel tool from previous hobbies. I really appreciate any advice since the nearest hobby shop is a couple of hours away!

You're good to go! Fallen wood is perfect for starting out. Just keep in mind that recently fallen logs might split when you carve them because they dry out faster. I'd suggest starting with sticks that are around 2-4 inches in diameter and try making some simple projects first.
For sure, use that fallen wood! It's actually softer than dry wood, so it can be easier to carve. Just make sure to check out some carving tutorials on YouTube. And definitely wear a mask when using power tools or sanding—you’d be surprised at how much dust you can inhale. Get out there and enjoy your carving process!
Absolutely, carving with fallen wood is fine! I often start with the Dremel to get the bulk off, especially if I'm making something detailed like a face. It's a great way to practice with your tools! Just remember to have fun and celebrate each success, no matter how small.
