I'm looking to dive into a new hobby that's more hands-on, as most of mine currently involve screens. I'm curious if I can just take a simple pocket knife and carve something out of any old piece of wood I find outside. Are there specific types of wood I should be using, or can I really use whatever I can get my hands on? I'm also concerned about whether this might dull my knife or cause issues.

I started with just a pocket knife and sandpaper! If you're just trying it out, using a stick could work fine. I used to whittle down sticks for my hair sticks and it was a blast! However, if you really enjoy it, you'll probably want to invest in better tools down the road.
You can definitely start woodcarving with a pocket knife, but keep in mind that the blade shape isn't the best for carving. While you can technically carve any wood, it's best to start with basswood. It's soft and has a nice straight grain, making it much easier to work with and less frustrating as you learn. Plus, if you're planning to dive deeper into this hobby, a good knife can really make a difference. I also recommend getting a carving glove for safety; it can save you from accidental cuts!
Yes, you can woodcarve with a pocket knife and a random stick, but it may not be the most enjoyable experience. Some woods are tougher and can chip your blade, so it's better to experiment with softer woods to start. Ultimately, it’s all about gaining experience. Try it out, but be ready to improve your toolset as you get more into it.
