I'm looking to tile a small nook in my kitchen that's about 30-35 sq. ft. I had planned this project since moving into my old house, but then my mother-in-law surprised us by replacing the old carpet with linoleum while we were away. It was a nice gesture, but not my first choice in flooring. To complicate things, she suspects there might be asbestos glue under the linoleum, so I'd prefer not to tear everything up. I know it's usually not recommended to tile over linoleum, but since it's flat and secure, is it possible? Should I use plywood or another base on top of it before tiling? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Tiling over linoleum isn't the best practice, but you can do it if necessary. Just make sure to get a multipurpose thinset that's suitable for various surfaces, and roughen up the linoleum a bit to help with the adhesion. That should give you a solid foundation for your new tiles.
I hear you about the unexpected changes! It's nice she improved the flooring, but I totally get it not being your choice. Just remember that while it's not ideal, as long as the linoleum is secure, you can still tile right over it with the right materials. Good luck with your project!
