Can I Tile Over OSB with Linoleum Adhesive Residue?

Asked By User42@jx9 On

I'm currently updating my bathroom and I've removed the linoleum that was glued to the OSB floor. While I managed to get most of the adhesive off, there's still some residue left, and I'm concerned about how it might affect adhesion when I apply thinset. I'm planning to use Ditra as an underlayment. Since my OSB is in good condition (the house is only 16 years old), will the thinset still stick properly over this adhesive residue? I've heard that Schluter All Set is suitable for OSB but I'm unsure how the glue left behind will impact that. What are my options here?

I had a similar problem in my kitchen. I ended up putting down a 1/4" backer board securely screwed to the floor before applying the Ditra. It’s not always necessary, but it helped ease my worries about adhesion. If your bathroom isn't too large and you won’t mess up the transition height at the door, this could be a good route to take for the small expense and height loss. Just a thought!

Yeah, I used thinset under my backer board. It seems to be the way to go to ensure everything sticks well.

That’s interesting! But since Hardibacker requires thinset underneath, did you apply the thinset or just screw it down directly? I'm trying to avoid any issues.

If you're really concerned about the adhesive, you might want to consider using a cement backer board instead of going directly onto the OSB. It can give you that extra peace of mind, especially when laying down the Ditra.

Honestly, I think you’ll be fine. The key is to have as little adhesive residue as possible, but it should stick if you prep it right. But hey, it can get messy and costly if it doesn’t work, so double-check the bonding procedures.

I really wish you're right! Can you share why you believe it’ll work? I’m just worried about it turning into a disaster if it doesn’t stick!
