Hey everyone! I've got some thin, hard vinyl glued to plywood and I'm looking to tile over it without removing the vinyl. I'm considering two options: the first is using all-set Schluter modified thinset mortar, then adding a cement board, followed by more thinset and finishing with the Schluter Ditra before tiling. The second option is using the thinset straight onto the vinyl, then applying the Schluter Ditra and then tiling. The vinyl is peeling slightly at the edges (I'll cut those off), and under the vanity, it's just bare plywood. My main question is whether I can skip the cement board or if it's absolutely necessary. Also, the height difference between the plywood and vinyl is about 1/16 inch—do you think the thinset mortar will be enough to level it out? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Why not just screw a new layer of plywood on top? That way you can tile right over it without stressing about the vinyl underneath. It could be a solid option!

Would I need to apply thinset under the new plywood? And what’s the advantage of plywood over cement board for tiling?
